A study by NYU recently published in the Nature Journal (June 2015) has shown that mice react negatively to antibiotics given to children. After tylosin and amoxicillin were used, effects were notice on weight gain, bone growth as well as the quality and diversity of the microbiome: The drugs altered not only the bacterial species, but also the relative numbers of microbial genes linked to specific metabolic functions. In the United States, before the age of 10 a child receives an average of 10 courses of antibiotics! Researchers say in doesn’t come at no cost, even if the study was made on mice, and pediatricians should change their prescriptions accordingly.
