Hibiscus or bissap

09/09/2023

Bissap, also known as hibiscus sabdariffa, is a plant used to prepare a refreshing and tangy drink popular in many African countries. The presence of calcium, iron, vitamin C, B2 and B3 gives it many virtues :

Digestion

The infusion of hibiscus flowers (bissap) helps support digestion. It is strongly recommended for the proper functioning of the intestine because it supports regular intestinal movements. In case of digestive discomfort, this drink can help restore optimal transit.

Relieves painful periods

It is a drink rich in antioxidants, vitamin C and flavonoids which are compounds that help reduce inflammation and pain associated with menstruation. To take advantage of this benefit, it is recommended to consume this drink throughout the month and not only during the period of the rules.

Vascular health

Studies have shown that regular consumption of this plant, at the rate of 3 cups a day for a period of 4 to 6 weeks, allows a reduction in blood pressure as well as a reduction in the level of “bad” cholesterol. Allowing good circulation of blood in the micro vessels, it can also be used in case of heavy legs in order to reduce this unpleasant sensation.

Diuretic

The plant acts as a detoxifier in the body. Its properties are officially recognized by the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) and the plant is even recommended to treat urinary tract infections and prevent kidney stones.

Antioxidant and stimulant

In 2010, researchers from the University of Oslo published in the Nutrition Journal the results of a study carried out on the antioxidant qualities of 283 drinks. To everyone’s surprise, it was not green tea that reaped the laurels, but… hibiscus. Hibiscus is therefore a natural antioxidant, and protects the human body against what are called free radicals. These free radicals are unstable compounds produced by the body, and increased in particular by stress, pollution, cigarettes or other external factors. These free radicals are responsible for cell aging and cause cardiovascular diseases, certain cancers, etc. in the long term. Hibiscus is also rich in vitamin C and therefore has toning properties. Its infusion helps to strengthen mental and physical abilities, and, overall, its consumption will make you feel more energetic.

Against anemia

Bissap is a drink rich in vitamin C and iron, two necessary and important elements in the fight against anemia.
