Eat That Broth!
Remember that grandma's magic recipe for every little pain, the hot chicken soup?
Well, it turns out that grandma really did know best. Our tutor Vania, (naturopath and also a "real" doctor), had a chat about it with our student Polly.
Let me write it here again for your benefit:
Question: As is mentioned in the manual for 'reconstituting cartilage', should I recommend collagen?
Answer: Instead of supplementing collagen, you could recommend to the patient eating bone broth. In fact, bone broth contains a bioavailable form of collagen your body can use right away, making it arguably superior to some supplements. It is made by simmering animal bones and connective tissue with liquid over a period of 12–24 hours to extract the collagen. An acidic ingredient, like wine or apple cider vinegar, is added in order to help draw the collagen, protein, and all other nutrients out of the bones and connective tissue. This, in turn, produces a gelatinous, protein-rich broth.
So there you have it. Eat your chicken broth (with a bit of wine added!) and all will be well for you.
