Constipation
Constipation is defined as difficulty in passing stools, with retention lasting from three to eight days. Beyond this period, it is considered chronic constipation.
Causes:
Constipation can have various causes. It may be linked to an organic issue such as dolichomegacolon, decreased peristalsis in the digestive tract, fecal impaction, or an obstruction in the sigmoid colon.
In some cases, looser stools may appear, giving the impression of improvement, but they can actually mask a build-up of material in the intestines.
During a consultation, it is important to assess medical risks and rule out serious conditions such as partial or complete intestinal obstruction, sigmoiditis, or appendicitis.
Symptoms:
A constipated person may go several days without a bowel movement and may experience:
- Abdominal heaviness
- Reduced gas
- Abdominal pain
How to Treat Constipation Naturally:
Medicinal Plants:
Certain plants have effective laxative properties, but they should be used with caution. Laxatives containing anthraquinones, such as senna, aloe, or buckthorn, can cause side effects if used long-term:
- Resistant constipation
- Darkening of the digestive mucosa
- Potential intestinal irritation
Senna:
Infuse 0.5–2 g of plant in cold water brought to a boil for 10–12 minutes. A 12-hour maceration can reduce resin content. Powder, capsule, or tablet doses: 0.5–2 g.
Buckthorn (Rhamnus):
Can be used longer-term in moderation. Maximum daily dose: 30 mg. For infusion: pour boiling water over 2 g of finely cut bark, infuse 10–15 minutes, then filter.
Cascara:
A tree related to buckthorn. Use 1–2 g of dried bark per day in 150 ml boiling water, infused 10–15 minutes.
Rhubarb:
Has a gentler laxative effect. Take 30–50 drops of mother tincture three times daily.
Black Radish:
Half a glass of black radish juice each morning can stimulate digestion and liver function.
Other Natural Approaches:
- Thermal cures
- Magnesium at weight-based doses
- Magnesium sulfate
- Karlsbad salt
Dietary Support:
Certain foods help stimulate transit:
- Prunes
- Fresh apple juice
- Fresh grape juice
Constipation Herbal Tea:
Mix equal parts (15 g each) of:
- Artichoke
- Buckthorn
- Sage
- Mallow
Preparation: Use one teaspoon of the mixture per 150 ml boiling water, infuse 15 minutes, then strain.
Lifestyle Advice:
Lifestyle plays a key role in preventing constipation:
- Have regular bowel movements, ideally once per day
- Eat a fiber-rich diet
- Drink about two liters of water daily
- Prefer certain mineral waters with laxative or liver-stimulating properties
- Do not ignore the urge to go, as social or professional constraints can delay bowel movements and worsen constipation
