Measles and Mumps: Good for You in the Long Run!

If you had measles or mumps as a child, there may be benefits.

A scientific discovery has shown that, contrary to what one might think, children who get measles or mumps are less likely to have a heart attack or stroke later in life.

This research was carried out by Japanese doctors, who found that men who had mumps and measles as children have 29% fewer heart attacks later on, and 17% fewer strokes. For women, the figures are 17% and 21% respectively. The conclusion is that measles and mumps, especially when both infections have occurred, protect against mortality from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
