The Gradual Decline of the Mediterranean Diet
According to the United Nations, and more specifically the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), new research shows that the famous Cretan diet is no longer the norm in the Mediterranean basin. Known for its health benefits, it is giving way to obesity and chronic disease because of changing lifestyles: globalization, the changing role of women in society, the disappearance of local crops, etc.
The Mediterranean diet not only has the advantage of preventing cardiovascular disease (lean meats, fish, fruits and vegetables, olive oil), it was also environmentally friendly, as it supported the local economy.
